Benzene: Dangerous Cancer-Causing Substance Hiding In Plain Sight

Experts are warning consumers about the formation of Benzene, a dangerous human carcinogen linked to blood cancers like leukemia. It is classified as Group 1 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.  Be cautious with packaged foods and beverages! You won't find benzene on the label, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

Benzene can form spontaneously when sodium benzoate (E211) or potassium benzoate (E212), common preservatives, are combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), especially under heat and light exposure. This reaction may occur in sodas, juices, energy drinks, salad dressings, pickles, sugar-free jams, and other processed foods while they sit on shelves, in warehouses, or in hot vehicles.

Not surprisingly, the issue has received greater regulatory attention abroad than in the United States. South Korea reportedly detected benzene in many vitamin drinks, while the UK and EU encouraged reformulation of children’s products and imposed stricter preservative oversight. China, India, Iran, and Taiwan have enacted tight restrictions or monitoring policies. In contrast, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is still relying on safety reviews dating back to 2005, while continuing to classify sodium benzoate as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).  This oversight may be putting consumers at risk.

Let's talk about the biological impact of benzene. Benzene metabolites can damage bone marrow stem cells, disrupt DNA, and alter tumor suppressor genes such as TP53.  Benzene may  contribute to blood cancers, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). There have also been potential epigenetic effects observed in lab studies.

Short-term (acute) exposure risks

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Tremors
  • Loss of consciousness at very high levels

Long-term exposure risks

  • Reduced production of blood cells
  • Anemia
  • Weakened immune system
  • Excessive bleeding due to low platelets
  • Bone marrow damage
  • Leukemia, especially acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
  • Other blood disorders and cancers such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)

Protect yourself by avoiding products containing sodium or potassium benzoate combined with vitamin C.  Be especially mindful of diet beverages and children’s drinks. Read labels carefully.  Avoid storing packaged foods or drinks where they may be exposed to heat.  Remember, the safest foods are always fresh, organic whole foods.

    What to Remember

Benzene is a dangerous carcinogen linked to blood cancers like leukemia.

You might not find benzene on your food labels, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

Benzene forms spontaneously in carelessly stored packaged foods.

Other countries have established strict policies to protect against benzene exposure in foods, but the U.S. lags behind.
