The Healing Power of Holiday Lights and Festivities

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.”
-Hamilton Wright Mabie

Does your heart jump with joy when you pass a twinkling light display in your neighborhood? Sources of joy are everywhere during the holiday season, and in seeking them more openly you may unlock the unexpected healing power of holiday lights and festivities.

There is something magical about lights glowing on a tree or candles flickering on the mantle. It’s something embraced and celebrated by nearly every religion and culture. Hinduism has the festival of lights; Judaism has the menorah; and Christianity has the advent wreath. Kwanza is celebrated with the seven candles, Diwali uses fireworks and lamps to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness; and many families embrace the lighting of Christmas trees and front yards throughout the month of December.

So, what is it about lights that draws us to it, improves our energy, and makes us feel better? One reason is that this time of year has the fewest number of daylight hours. During the winter solstice light is limited, and so we begin to appreciate every glow that much more. Light is also a symbol for all that is good and pure. Erasmus said it best: “Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself.”

More importantly, there is a powerful healing energy to light itself. Reiki practitioners have been calling on the healing energy of white light since 1914. And light boxes have been the most recommended treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder since the 1980’s. Recently science has confirmed that shining red-colored light directly on your skin may provide an immediate boost of energy in addition to speeding wound healing, reducing pain, improving infertility and potentially improving many other medical issues (Sommer et al, 2015). It’s not such a big leap then to accept the healing power of holiday lights as well.

Of course, it’s not only the lights themselves that are healing, it’s also the power of human connection. Psychology Today confirms the healing and stress reducing benefits of something as simple as joining together for a holiday dinner. Holiday festivities bring us together as families and communities with a variety of parties, events, and parades filled with light, love, and laughter. When we think of the sadness of all that is going on in the world at any given moment, it is powerful to also remember the presence of good cheer, generosity, and Universal Love. Holiday gatherings do just that. Coincidentally, much of the holiday music we enjoy during these festivities are infused with vibrations at the ideal energetic healing frequency—528 hz.
